Introduction

It's probably been a while since you studied mythology. Despite the fact mythology is really old news --  well over a thousand years -- it still shapes our world. This is especially true of the great literature we will read in this course. British literature is full of allusions to Greek, Roman, and Norse Mythology.

Skeptical that mythology still carries an impact?  Think of the millions Disney invested in animating Hercules. Or, think about the TV program by the same name. Those are adaptations of Greek myths. Nearly fifty constellations are linked to Greek mythology.  Ever wear Nike shoes?  Why are they called Nike?  It's Greek mythology!  Check out the names of the days of the week . . . that's Norse mythology!  Even your body bears the mark of mythology.  The tendon that connects to your foot? It's your Achilles' heel! Another allusion to Greek mythology!

Mythology -- whether Greek, Roman, or Norse -- is pretty interesting stuff. It is filled with monsters, the supernatural, and adventures. This WebQuest will refresh your memories about major mythological figures you should know.

The Task

Create a dream team of seven figures from Graeco/Roman and Norse mythology that are designed to meet the dynamics of your scenario.  Creatively present your Dream Team to your classmates via a Powerpoint presentation in which all team members participate and cooperatively write a creative conclusion to your scenario.

The Scenarios

Mythology paints these powerful figures as worthy of the respect of mankind. Many were considered gods or demi-gods.  They were in some pretty unusual and horrific situations, but nothing can compare to "The Twelve Trials."  These will be new situations your Dream Team must conquer and cope with.

STEP 2:  Your Web Quest team receives its adventure scenario.

STEP 4:  After cutting the list to 24 possible "Dream Team" members, the Web Quest team will divide these remaining gods/goddesses so that each team member will will create a one-page Dossier on several figures from both Norse & Graeco-Roman mythology. See Dossier Sheet.

STEP 5:  Each team member will research the information needed to fully complete their assigned Dossiers. To receive full credit, each team members must . . .

Congratulations! You have completed  a one-of-a-kind Web Quest assignment designed by your teacher. WebQuests are a unique teaching tool designed to prepare you for the world of the future by creating a team-oriented research project that leads you to become more familiar with the powerful technology available to us all on the worldwide web.

One of the primary goals of this project was for you to review important information about  Graeco/Roman and Norse Mythology for readings you will experience later in this class. Another goal was for you to refine basic researching skills before you encounter the Honors English class term paper project.

To this end, I wanted you to become more acquainted with ideas including online books, hot links, list server, primary sources, secondary sources, annotated bibliographies, MLA citations, search engines, and more.

I also hope you had a little fun along the way.
