Text Box: FVL’S VOLUNTEER SERVICE PROGRAM

Gal. 6:10:  Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those

who belong to the family of believers.

Program Overview: FVL’s Volunteer Service Program exists to offer students opportunities to respond to the grace God has shown to all in Christ.  Jesus reminds us that what we do for others we also do for him.  In addition, college admissions personnel and scholarship review committees consider volunteer activities to be an increasingly important component of an applicant’s qualifications.

The volunteer service program provides students an opportunity to receive non-graded transcript credit for a variety of service activities within their schools, congregations, and their communities.  While enrolled at FVL, students may receive credit for time spent serving their Savior in service activities within the GetNvolved® web site.

GetNvolved® is a one-of-a-kind online application that connects students to their communities through volunteer service.  Here, students, teachers and community agencies can learn about opportunities, keep track of records and run reports.  GetNvolved® helps build resumes and provides a convenient method for tracking service hours.

2.        Preview the The Opportunities (OPPS) Grid of the GetNvolved® web-based service program.

3.        To volunteer for an OPP that is listed on the Opportunity Grid, watch the video “How a Student Volunteers from the Opportunities Grid.”

4.        To record volunteering that is not listed on the Opportunity Grid, watch the video, “Recording Hours for Off-the-Grid Opportunities.”  When you are finished with your service, click “Submit For Final Approval,” and your record will be emailed to the volunteer activity supervisor who confirms your service.

The GetNvolved® web site has an extensive HELP section that provides clear instructions and answers most questions regarding log in, finding service opportunities (STAR Grid), how to volunteer and log hours, how to record service activities on The Opportunities (OPPS) Grid, accessing Student Tracking and Activity Reports (STARS), and many other topics as well.

Activities that are compensated (e.g., church organist) do NOT qualify for the program.

·         The number of volunteer activity hours determines the amount of service credits awarded on the student’s transcript.  To receive the next .25 service credit, the student must exceed the hour requirement of that level.  For example, to receive .50 service credit, the student must log 50+ hours.  These hours may accumulate from single or multiple simultaneous activities.

            25 hours:   .25 credit                  75 hours:  .75 credit

            50 hours:   .50 credit                  100 hours:   1.0 credit

·         Some activities involve significant preparation time (e.g., teaching Sunday School).  A student teaching Sunday school would log both prep time and teaching time each week.

·         A student will have four years to complete a full credit in a service activity.  For example, if a student teaches VBS every year and logs over 25 hours each year, the student would have enough hours to receive a full credit after four years.
