Grades & Student Recognition

Grading System
God asks all His people to work to the best of their abilities. For students, a large part of this means a commitment to doing their best in the classroom. FVL's marking system is listed below:

A Excellent
B Above Average
C Average
D Below Average
F Failure

In addition, plus and minus grades are used to gauge student progress.

ADDITIONAL GRADES
These additional marks are used in special situations.

I Incomplete*
AUD Audit with no credit
P Passing but no credit
W Withdrawal
WP Withdrawal Passing
WF Withdrawal Failing

*An Incomplete is given when, because of illness, absence, or other valid excuse, insufficient work has been turned in to warrant a grade. The student is responsible for all make-up work. An "Incomplete" becomes an "F" if the work is not completed within two weeks after the end of the marking period, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

FAILING GRADES
A failing final mark in any required course must be made up in order to receive a diploma. Failure to make up a required course or to earn the total required credits means a student will receive a certificate of attendance instead of a diploma.

Report Cards / Final Grades
Semester report cards are mailed after end of semester grade processing is complete. All term and midterm progress reports throughout the semester are available only online through FVL's Family Access program. Parents may sign up for an account and password during "Meet Your Teachers" night in early September or by calling the front office at (920) 739.4441.

Only final semester grades become part of the student's permanent record, and determine a student's class rank and honor roll status.

Transcripts
Credits earned at FVL are transferable to other secondary schools - public, private, or parochial - and to institutions of higher learning inside and outside the state of Wisconsin. Students requiring transcripts should contact the school office. The cost per transcript is $2. No transcript of credits will be issued until all financial obligations to FVL have been met.

Attendance For Credit Policy
FVL’s attendance for credit policy ensures that students are receiving a quality education.

  1. Course credit will be forfeited on the 15th absence from a class in a semester course or the 8th absence in a quarter course. This includes all absences recorded as a part of the student’s attendance record (excused or unexcused). These would not include absences for school-related activities.
  2. After a student has accumulated 10 absences in a semester course or 5 absences in a quarter course, the administration reserves the right to disallow a student's participation in school-sponsored activities.
  3. In situations involving special medical or other reasons which require an extended absence, immediate contact should be made with the administration.

Cumulative Student Records
A cumulative record is kept for each student. This record offers a picture of a student’s progress in brief form: grades, grade point average, class rank, test scores, and attendance record. The cumulative record is valuable for placing the student in jobs, schools, and colleges. A written request from a parent (or from the student, if an adult) is required before a transcript of the student’s record is sent to an employer or another school. Requests should be directed to the school office or to a guidance counselor.

Honor Roll
The Guidance Department prepares the honor roll at the close of each semester. Placement on the honor roll is determined by averaging the grades earned by the student. Honor Roll is determined by individual semester not cumulative grade point average. Special recognition certificates and awards are given to recognize students who achieve honor roll status. All rankings are calculated on the 4-point system. Names of students who receive honor roll ranking are mailed to each student’s home newspaper for publication.

Average Rank
3.75-4.00 Highest Honors
3.50-3.74 High Honors
3.30-3.49 Honors
3.00-3.29 Honorable Mention

National Honor Society
The Fox Valley Lutheran Chapter of the National Honor Society recognizes students who have excelled in developing their God-given talents and abilities.  To be eligible for membership, junior and senior candidates must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.60 (after four semesters for juniors and six semesters for seniors). Academics, character, leadership and service are criteria for membership. The induction ceremony is usually held in early December.
