Fox Valley Lutheran H.S.
Fox Valley Lutheran High School’s (FVL) Guidance Department is located in the
main corridor between the Commons and Academic Center. The department provides
a full range of support services for students and their parents in the college
search, application and transition process.
A staff of three counselors and an administrative assistant help students gather, evaluate and prioritize information in order to be well-informed about their college choices. Once those important choices are made, our staff monitors the timely completion and mailing of applications. Our goal is to facilitate the college selection process without preempting the central role of the student and the family in making this important decision.
Providing direction already during the freshman year, FVL’s college guidance program emphasizes the importance of academic diligence and cocurricular involvement. Students are encouraged to start early and to pace the college search to allow the opportunity to ask many questions, and to consult as many sources for answers as possible. Counselors guide students to define their academic strengths and preferences as they consider college majors or careers. In addition, counselors help students realistically assess their chances of admission and encourage students to explore a range of options in terms of cost, selectivity, curriculum and location. Students are encouraged to consider how career choices might be used for life-long service to their Savior while using the gifts they’ve been given.
1 Peter 4:10: Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.
FVL’s counselors also help colleges learn more about FVL students by means of detailed letters of recommendation that highlight each student’s accomplishments in and out of the classroom. The FVL School Profile, which accompanies every application, is updated annually and includes information about FVL’s outstanding faculty, curriculum, standardized test scores, special programs and distinctions.
FVL provides its students digital technology in accessing resources from the Internet and the comprehensive Guidance web page. Assistance is also given with standardized test preparation as well as with college, financial aid, scholarship searches and online applications.
As the following program overview shows, FVL’s Guidance Department is a busy place. We encourage students to make frequent use of our Career Center and resources, and to see their counselor regularly. We welcome and encourage visits from parents.
